Are your employees cheating the system?

Read my blog and join the conversation: www.HOTELSMag.com, 2/21/13, by Yvette Jong, Craft House LLC

“Two things that stick in my mind from my Cornell education include how nasty hotel rooms are when you hold a black light to the sheets and walls, and how you can cheat the system by presenting the same beer bill to multiple guests and pocketing the cash. The second lesson was a probably a fleeting comment made by a professor, but what I took from it was that if I knew how employees could cheat the system, I’d be better equipped to prevent them from doing so.

The coexistence of good and fast service

Read my blog on the coexistence of good and fast service at www.HOTELSMag.com, 11/27/12, by Yvette Jong, Craft House LLC

“Gallup recently did some research about how faster service doesn’t mean better service quality despite the trend for many companies to lean towards speed and efficiency as points of differentiation. In many cases, I couldn’t agree more. If your employees struggle to get things done properly in five minutes, why encourage them to do them in three? I love this line in particular: “In short, companies must bear in mind that ‘speed of service’ contains two critical elements: speed and service.”

Inside the minds of Millennials

Read my blog on the challenges and strategies behind hiring, developing and retaining Millennials in the workplace at www.HOTELSMag.com, 8/21/12, by Yvette Jong, Craft House LLC

“I may be one of the few bloggers who falls into the “Millennials” category, so I’d like to share stories that will help you understand how this group fits into your workplace.

If you aren’t familiar, Millennials were born between 1976 and 2001, and currently between the ripe age of 11(!) and 36. We’re a demographic that by 2014 will make up 36% of the U.S. workforce, and 46% by 2020. But instead of sharing too many facts about Millennials, I’ll share some stories from friends so you can see how their different character traits and values may change the way you strategically recruit, develop and retain them.

If I wanted a generic answer, I’d read a guidebook

Read my blog on Hotel Concierges at www.HOTELSMag.com, 5/1/2012, by Yvette Jong, Craft House LLC

“If I wanted a generic answer, I’d read a guidebook.

Have you ever found yourself stepping into someone else’s conversation at the concierge desk to offer a guest an opinion of your own? Perhaps there’s a language barrier, the concierge looks lost or the advice the guest has been given has nothing to do with what they asked for. Except in the first of those three circumstances, there’s nothing I hate more than a hotel employee who, with full confidence, makes a blind recommendation on what to do or see without first trying to gauge my interests. Sure, I may have asked for a recommendation, but that recommendation should be customized for me. After all, no one knows the city better than they do, and nothing makes me lose more confidence in the concierge than a passerby with a better suggestion….” (read more)
