Is imported always an improvement? Challenge your palates!

Hong Kong is obsessed with imported foods. They’re branded, overpackaged and overpriced, and their flashy supermarket displays are designed to make you feel extra special about your purchase. Of course there are other reasons people opt for imports – it’s the food scares across the border, the fear of contamination, the lack of variety in local produce, and the fact that Hong Kong simply isn’t an agriculture and food economy. As a result, “we spend 4.4% of our GDP on importing food, higher than any other country on the index,” and 95% of our food is imported. According to Todd Darling, “what if half of it was spent on innovating local agriculture?”

Home cooked meals for those with more money than time

While I love the romance of cooking on a lazy Sunday, the sad truth is that cooking on a workday can be more frustrating than fun.  I spend more time shopping for ingredients than I care for, can spend more on groceries than I would if I ate in a restaurant, and find it’s already bedtime before all the prepping, cooking, eating and cleaning is finally over and done.  The solution? Secret Ingredient.

For those of you who wish there were more hours in the day, Secret Ingredient preps all your mise-en-place, packages the ingredients with a great labeling system and delivers them straight to your door with fool proof cooking instructions.  So we gave it a go.
