“I may be one of the few bloggers who falls into the “Millennials” category, so I’d like to share stories that will help you understand how this group fits into your workplace.
If you aren’t familiar, Millennials were born between 1976 and 2001, and currently between the ripe age of 11(!) and 36. We’re a demographic that by 2014 will make up 36% of the U.S. workforce, and 46% by 2020. But instead of sharing too many facts about Millennials, I’ll share some stories from friends so you can see how their different character traits and values may change the way you strategically recruit, develop and retain them. Today I had coffee with one of the most passionate men I know. He’s a determined individual with such a genuine passion for sustainable development and tourism, that’s he’s ready to break stigmas in his pursuit of it. He and I can talk endlessly about the topic, we finish each other’s sentences and our values resonate with one another’s. I just heard about another luxury hotel opening in China. When will our industry realize that what this country really needs are well-designed, well-appointed, sweet, simple, and affordable brand equivalents to an Ibis, or even Aloft?
With high-speed rail travel becoming more prevalent, increases in disposable income, and domestic tourism rising from 744 million in 2000 to 2.1 billion in 2010, it’s obvious there’s an entire demographic our industry is failing to cater to. It’s high time we shift our focus and start building high quality budget hotels that are localized to serve domestic markets better than any international brand can. Read more...
