Are your employees cheating the system?

Read my blog and join the conversation: www.HOTELSMag.com, 2/21/13, by Yvette Jong, Craft House LLC

“Two things that stick in my mind from my Cornell education include how nasty hotel rooms are when you hold a black light to the sheets and walls, and how you can cheat the system by presenting the same beer bill to multiple guests and pocketing the cash. The second lesson was a probably a fleeting comment made by a professor, but what I took from it was that if I knew how employees could cheat the system, I’d be better equipped to prevent them from doing so.

Fifty Shades of Gray replaces hotel bibles…

Being in HKG, you don’t really hear the hype about new books, so when I saw the title “Fifty Shades of Gray” 3 times across the top 10 NYT Bestseller list, I thought I’d give it a go.  While it isn’t exactly for me, this book is taking up the world by storm. Women everywhere are reading it in secret, reading it in public, fantasizing about it at work, ignoring their husbands and ignoring their children while they escape into the steamy novels that read more like badly written harlequins that should have drawings of Fabio on the cover.

Dream for sale

I never thought people would be asking me if I’d know someone interested in purchasing a 145 hectare lot in the Tuscan countryside with 7000 square meters of buildable GFA, a castle, vines, olive trees, award winning Chianti and hotel rooms.  But if I do find that person I just might ask if they’d hire me to run it!

China is the new Texas, but who cares?

China loves its superlatives.  Everything now has to be the biggest, fastest or tallest.  But really, who cares?

Below are some superlatives that might be impressive, but when developers and designers tell me they have grand plans to build the largest hotel lobby, porte cochere or awning, I honestly can’t help but laugh to myself.  Really, who cares? Would they ever stay at a hotel because it had the biggest driveway? And don’t they not realize how quickly such superlatives are diminished by new developers claiming the same silly thing? Think about Shanghai’s World Financial Center, which was the tallest building in the world for a split second before the Burj Dubai and Abraj Al-Bait Towers were built.
