How to diminish the value of a luxury brand

Does this say luxury to you?

Just had a conversation with a friend about putting a luxury hotel brand name on locally bottled water (you know, to be ecofriendly and reduce food miles associated with bottled imports).  But he has a point – if you put your name on a cheap bottle of water, doesn’t it diminish the value of your luxury brand?

It’s high time we shift our focus in China

I just heard about another luxury hotel opening in China.  When will our industry realize that what this country really needs are well-designed, well-appointed, sweet, simple, and affordable brand equivalents to an Ibis, or even Aloft?

With high-speed rail travel becoming more prevalent, increases in disposable income, and domestic tourism rising from 744 million in 2000 to 2.1 billion in 2010, it’s obvious there’s an entire demographic our industry is failing to cater to.  It’s high time we shift our focus and start building high quality budget hotels that are localized to serve domestic markets better than any international brand can.

Group buying for private jets: a win-win situation

For most of us, the idea of hiring a private jet is completely foreign.  But in a tight economy, Jetsuite, a private jet charter company, has started a host of promotions to make private jets more affordable to monetize otherwise empty seats:

  • Suite Savers – low fares on flights between certain destinations
  • Suite Deals – last minute deals posted on Facebook for as little as $499 per seat
  • Suite Share – the ability to hire a jet, then offer seats to the public via the Jet Suite Facebook site.
If others join, your cost  goes down incrementally, with the chance to fly for free if you’re able to sell all seats on the flight!

Maldives announces mandate for solar energy

The Maldives are sinking, energy’s a fortune and waste disposal is a major issue. At Climate Week NYC, the country’s vice president announces a mandate that 60% of energy be produced by solar power in a bid to be carbon neutral by 2020.

In a bid to be the first carbon neutral hotel, Six Senses resort, Soneva Fushi in the Maldives, is taking a lead:

  • Photovoltaic solar panels, solar thermal energy and solar shingles
  • Pilot programs for biogas, biofuel and deep sea water cooling
  • Heat recovery
  • Eco-conversion of facilities
