Manila : Love it or hate it

Manila doesn’t have the best reputation. People who visit the city question it’s safety and complain there isn’t the cuisine, culture or architecture of other Southeast Asian cities. Their airport is poorly managed, infrastructure is old, and though it was one a beautiful city, most tourists try to stay in the safe havens surrounding the Greenbelts in Makati or Fort Bonifacio where lifestyle shops and restaurants protect you from the “real Manila.”  And while these critics could be right about some elements, few ever take a moment to understand what really made the city the way it is now.

Retaining Skilled Workers in the Philippines

Read my blog on the challenge of retaining skilled hospitality workers in the Philippines at www.HOTELSMag.com, 7/23/12, by Yvette Jong, Craft House LLC

“A recent article in the Financial Times highlighted the Philippines’ growth in a market where most sovereign countries are suffering from negative outlooks. While most of us know its growth is supported by steady increases in overseas remittances from the Philippine diaspora, what caught my eye me was this paragraph:

“Put off by tough competition for jobs in Manila, the 24-year-old graduate in hotel and restaurant management left the Philippine capital for Singapore two months ago and sends more than half her monthly pay — about S$500 (US$394) — back home.”

What’s your motivation? I traveled to ____ to ____.

In a quest to better understand what motivates travelers, I thought I’d share some personal motivations.

I traveled to ____________ to _____________.

SRI LANKA to see it before it became overdeveloped after the war ended.

UZBEKISTAN to see the madressas, eat shashlik, and be a tourist in a place with no tourists.

TAJIKISTAN to camp out in the remote mountains and lakes.

ISRAEL to be taken back through history in Jerusalem, float in the Dead Sea (and eat loads of hummus).

INDIA to eat loads of yummy vegetarian food and psych myself into thinking I was being healthy.

Plastic bottle + H20 + bleach = 50 watt lightbulb

In modern society we take a LOT of things for granted, but we don’t often think about windows or indoor lighting as a luxury (I type this as I sit in a room lit entirely by natural daylight through the windows). In some parts of the Philippines, however, communities live in compact and congested shelters where indoor light is so scarce, those who live there stay outdoors just to stay sane.  My Shelter Foundation does great work to help change their livelihoods by making “50 watt lightbulbs” that are virtually free, sustainable and last up to 5 years using the most basic technology (if you can call it that).
