These days we’re constantly challenged to find gifts for friends, family, colleagues and clients. How do you buy something for someone who has everything they need, or someone you know little about? It’s always safe to get them flowers or a bottle of wine, and far more challenging to get them something personal if you don’t know them well. A book is always good, but only if you know what they like to read. Hong Kong is obsessed with imported foods. They’re branded, overpackaged and overpriced, and their flashy supermarket displays are designed to make you feel extra special about your purchase. Of course there are other reasons people opt for imports – it’s the food scares across the border, the fear of contamination, the lack of variety in local produce, and the fact that Hong Kong simply isn’t an agriculture and food economy. As a result, “we spend 4.4% of our GDP on importing food, higher than any other country on the index,” and 95% of our food is imported. According to Todd Darling, “what if half of it was spent on innovating local agriculture?”

Manila doesn’t have the best reputation. People who visit the city question it’s safety and complain there isn’t the cuisine, culture or architecture of other Southeast Asian cities. Their airport is poorly managed, infrastructure is old, and though it was one a beautiful city, most tourists try to stay in the safe havens surrounding the Greenbelts in Makati or Fort Bonifacio where lifestyle shops and restaurants protect you from the “real Manila.” And while these critics could be right about some elements, few ever take a moment to understand what really made the city the way it is now.
